An interview is a conversation between two or more people where questions are asked by the interviewer to elicit facts or statements from the interview.
Preparing for a job interview
The job interview is a crucial part of your job search because it is an opportunity for the employer to figure out if you are right for the job. This page will provide you with information to prepare for our job interview so that you can make a positive and lasting impression.
Before the interview
Be sure to do some background research to become familiar with the organization. This might include researching any current events that might relate to the organization or industry, the organization's goals and objectives, and the history of the company. Here are some questions to help you with your research:
- What does the organization do?
- What's involved in the position you are applying for?
- What qualifications do you need for the position?
- What kind of skills is the employer looking for?
- Who are the customers or clients?
- What kind of reputation does the employer have?
You will be more comfortable in the interview if you know a bit about the company and the position you are applying for.
Print off an extra copy of your resume so the employer can refer to it during the interview. You should also bring a copy of your reference list.
Preparing for interview questions
One of the best ways to prepare for an interview is to anticipate questions the interviewer may ask. This will allow you to give thoughtful and organized answers during your interviewer.
Here are some questions you should be comfortable answering:
- What major challenges and problems did you face? How did you handle them?
Be sure to include specific examples of how you handled a particularly difficult situation. Discuss how you researched the issue and contribute to finding a solution. Examples of good responses include:
1. During a difficult
financial period, I was able to satisfactorily negotiate repayment schedules
with multiple vendors.
2. When the software
development of our new product stalled, I coordinated the team which managed to
get the schedule back on track. We were able to successfully troubleshoot the
issues and solve the problems, within a very short period of time.
3. A long-term client was
about to take their business to a competitor. I met with the customer and was
able to change how we handled the account on a day-to-day basis, in order to
keep the business.
- What have you learned from your mistakes?
Be sure to give examples that turn a negative (a mistake) into a positive.
Examples of good responses include:
1. I think one of the most
important things I've learned is persistence. Not to give up too soon, because
the solution is probably right in front of me.
2. I have learned to give
every person a second chance, because first impressions can often be
misleading.
3. I used to think that there
was one best solution to a problem, but I've learned that that kind of thinking
limits the possibility of great success.
- What do you expect from a supervisor?
I appreciate a work environtment where supervisoirs try to make personal connections with their employees.
- Describe your ideal boss!
I would like to be able to go to my manager if I have an issue or idea and to be able to feel comfortable to expressing my thoughts. I would also expect my supervisor to be open and honest with me and to let me know if there is anything I could do to improve upon of do differently in my work.
- Are you leaving your job?/Why do you want to change jobs?
1. I found myself bored with the work and looking for more
challenges. I am an excellent employee and I didn't want my unhappiness to have
any impact on the job I was doing for my employer.
2. There isn't room for growth
with my current employer and I'm ready to move on to a new challenge.
3. I'm looking for a bigger
challenge and to grow my career and I couldn't job hunt part time while
working. It didn't seem ethical to use my former employer's time.
4. I was laid-off from my last
position when our department was eliminated due to corporate restructuring.
5. I'm relocating to this area
due to family circumstances and left my previous position in order to make the
move.
6. I've decided that is not
the direction I want to go in my career and my current employer has no
opportunities in the direction I'd like to head.
7. After several years in my last
position, I'm looking for a company where I can contribute and grow in a
team-oriented environment.
8. I am interested in a new
challenge and an opportunity to use my technical skills and experience in a
different capacity than I have in the past.
9. I recently received my
degree and I want to utilize my educational background in my next position.
10. I am interested in a job
with more responsibility, and I am very ready for a new challenge.
11. I left my last position in order to spend more time with my family. Circumstances have changed and I'm more than ready for full-time employment again.
12. I am seeking a position with a stable company with room for growth and opportunity for advancement.
13. I was commuting to the city and spending a significant amount of time each day on travel. I would prefer to be closer to home
14. To be honest, I wasn't considering a move, but I saw this job posting and was intriguid by the position and the company. It sounds like an exciting opportunity and an ideal match with my qualifications.
15. This position seemed like an excellent match for my skills and
experience and I am not able to fully utilize them in my present job.
- Why did you resign?/Why did you quit your job?
1. I resigned because there were limited opportunities for
advancement and I wanted to further my career.
2. I graduated from college and resigned in order to find a
position where I could use my education and related experience.
3. To be honest, the position wasn't a fit and I decided it
made sense to resign and to refocus my career path.
4. I resigned because the position required me to be on-call
evenings and weekends and it was difficult to arrange child care on short
notice.
5. I resigned because the position was part-time and my
personal situation has changed so I need full-time employment.
6. My skills weren't a good match for my previous employer's
needs but it looks like they'd be a terrific fit for this position.
7. I resigned from my job because I am interested in a new
challenge and an opportunity to use my skills and experience in a different
capacity than I have in the past.
8. My family relocated to this area and my previous employer
doesn't have an office here.
9. I've been working as a temp, but I'm seeking a permanent
position, so I resigned from the temp agency's staffing roster.
10. I resigned for personal reasons, however, at this point
in time, I am excited about moving into a new position.
11. I'm seeking a new challenge and to grow my career and it
was difficult to job search while working.
12. I resigned due to family circumstances, however, I have
regained the flexibility I need to work effectively in a full-time job.
- What have you been doing since your last job?
1. I worked on several freelance projects, while actively
job seeking.
2. I volunteered for a literacy program that assists
disadvantaged children.
3. My aging parents needed a temporary caregiver and I spent
time looking after them.
4. I took some continuing education classes and seminars.
